History

The founder Matt Ramme, said the name is a combination of 'sports' and 'oracle'. The company is headquartered in Seattle and metropolitan Detroit. Ramme claimed he wanted a centralized web location to practice trivia since there were no prior applications that accommodated these desires. Currently there are over 1 million quizzes that have been played over 3 billion times. [2]

Appeal

Originally designed for an older audience, students and the younger demographic showed strong interest as well. This led to the creation of the College Rankings, where students could register their university to see how it compared to other schools in the country. Additionally, Sporcle quizzes have been linked by popular sources such as Mental Floss, ESPN and hundreds of other sites. Players can also collect badges and achievements for certain scores or accomplishments in specific quizzes. These scores and badges can be shared with Sporcle friends and the community. [3]
