Overview

Quizlet is the leading mobile (both Apple and Android) and web-based study application, making it simple for students and teachers to create and share online learning materials. It's currently used by 2 in 3 high school students and 1 in 2 college students in the US.[1] Students can search millions of different study sets, to learn via flash cards, fill in the blank, match terms and definitions, and other study games. Teachers can have students use existing sets or even create their own with the templates available.

History

The founder of Quizlet start the website in 2005 when he was asked to memorize 111 animal names for his French class. Then Quizlet was released the public in 2007.[2][3] In 2011 text to speech capability was added.

Additional Flashcard Features

Quizlet is primarily used for creating flashcards. Users with an account can create flashcard sets that can be stored in folders, or classes if they created a teacher account. Users can import sets from Word, Excel, Google Docs, etc. or on ios paying users can scan documents using their phone to create flashcards.[4] Users can also create them from scratch.[5]

When created a flashcard set, users can write out and/or record the term and definition. When creating the definition, paying users can search Quizlet images or upload their own image to attach to the flashcard.

Users can also create diagrams by uploading an image. The user then will select areas to drop terms onto the image. The user can also create definitions to pair with the terms.[6]

For the above listed additional features, some features may be used a few times with a free version of Quizlet and then have an unlimited use with a paid version of Quizlet.

Types of Study Sessions

Flash Card

This mode is similar to paper flash cards. In it, users are shown a "card" for each term. Users can click to flip over the card or use their arrow keys, and see the definition for that term.[7]

Gravity

In this study mode, definitions scroll vertically down the screen in the shape of asteroids. The user must type the term that goes with the definition before it reaches the bottom of the screen. If the term reaches the bottom of the screen, the answer is displayed for the student to type it out. If a read asteroid hits the bottom of the screen, the player loses the game. Gravity is one of the 'Play' study modes, adapted from a previous version called Space Race. The user can pick the level of difficulty and select if they will type the term, definition, or random mix of term or definition.[8]

Learn

In this study mode, users are shown a term or definition and must type the term or definition that goes with what is shown. After entering their answer, users see if their answer was correct or not, and can choose to override the automatic grading and count their answer as right if needed. As a user gains familiarity with the terms, Quizlet will move from multiple choice questions to fill in the blank questions. After studying in learn, Quizlet will alert the of the terms that they know or should study more. [9]

Long-Term Learning

This study mode is only available for Quizlet Plus users. In this study mode, users are given a recommended study set based on whether or not they answer study set questions correctly. Repetition of terms answered incorrectly increases in frequency and a dashboard shows learning progress over time. The mode uses spaced repetition concepts to focus on longer-term retention and subject mastery versus shorter-term memorization. Quizlet will send emails to help the user know which flashcards should be reviewed. [10]

Spell Mode

In this mode, the term is read out loud and users must type in the term with the correct spelling. Spell mode works with 18 different languages, additionally paying users can record their own flashcard sets. [11]

Match mode

In this study mode, users are presented with terms and definitions scattered around the page. Users drag terms on top of their associated definitions to remove them from the page in the fastest time possible. Micromatch is a related matching game geared towards mobile devices and devices with small screens. Users may access the Micromatch mode on non-mobile devices by manually editing the URL in Match mode to use "micromatch" instead of "match". Match was previously attributed as "Scatter". Though the name of the study mode changed, the game itself did not.

Write mode

In this study mode, users are given either the definition or the term and must fill in the corresponding answer by typing it out.[12]

Test mode

In this study mode, users must answer the set with question types from learn, write, and spell.

Quizlet Live
