Overview
EdPuzzle is a video-based website that allows you to create lessons and quizzes on a video. It allows you to have students stop and answer a question at any point in time of your choosing in the video. The video will remain paused until the question is answered unless you specify that it can be skipped. The questions you ask are automatically graded if they are multiple choice, hand graded (using a very simple percentage tool) if they are short answer. Questions can be multiple choice, true or false, short answer, choice all of the correct answers, or end of the video quizzes. To use the product, teachers sign up with a free account, add a class, then invite students to join that class by using a corresponding class code. You can upload your own video or use any other video on YouTube or any other video source to create an EdPuzzle. EdPuzzle also syncs with Google classroom so the students grades will get posted as soon as they posted in EdPuzzle.
EdPuzzle is a great way to review a lesson, present a lesson, or take a quiz at the end of a lesson review. It can also work well for a "flipped" classroom, as it will monitor who did their work at home and who did not. Additionally, this website could also be a lifesaver for a substitute teacher as well. Overall, EdPuzzle is a great tool- and it's free!
History
Quim Sabrià, CEO and cofounder of EdPuzzle with Jordi Gonzalez, Xavier Verges Parisi, and Santiago Herrero Bajo, taught high school math in an impoverished community in Barcelona as part of Teach for Spain (Empieza Por Educar). Sabria wanted to “flip” his classroom by pointing students to video content that they could watch on their own. But although the web has a huge video repository, Sabria felt that most of the video didn’t fit the needs of his students, or his desire to present shorter video snippets. He and his team created EdPuzzle to help teacher remix and edit existing videos into customized content.
