Overview
Superkids is an online reading tool geared for grades K-2. The program is for use by both teachers and students/parents. Teachers are provided with a vast array of tools such as interactive songs introducing letters or certain letter sounds for use within the classroom (i.e. to introduce a new lesson), tools for communication with parents, tutorials for classroom activities, reteaching and reinforcement of ideas, and report maintenance of student online reading activity. For students, there are interactive books of varying levels and interests for pre-readers to fluent readers. There are also interactive and engaging online games for students to play that help reinforce letter and word recognition. For every book and game completed, students earn a star. Teachers have the option to reward students for meeting certain numbers of stars throughout the school year to encourage online learning in a fun and educational way.
Based on discussions with educators currently utilizing this tool, there are some technical difficulties that they have been experiencing with the tool. Namely, accessibility issues for parents/students logging into the online tool at home. Families have been receiving error message such as the site currently being down for maintenance when there is no maintenance scheduled. It was noted that there were several new resources added to the online tool in 2018, which could have accounted for some of the technical difficulties recently experienced on the site. However, the benefits that both educators and students experience from the site, in addition to the affordability of the software for these educators, seem to outweigh the difficulties experienced with the site.
