Welcome to Wikucation

This site exists as part of the Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) Master of Arts in Education program. Our goal is to gain some hands on experience with the use of Wikis within the realm of education. This site is hosted using WikiMedia. This is the same platform that is used by Wikipedia, which is probably one of the most well-known of all wikis.

Wikis are historically used for a variety of purposes including:

  • Knowledge Construction
  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
  • Glossaries
  • Summaries
  • Encyclopedias
  • Collaborative Research
  • Debates
  • Service Learning Projects

While there are many platforms and many resources available to edit Wikis with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor, I do believe that it is useful to start with wiki-text. The editor used here will help us take the emphasis off of "making everything look nice" and focus on some standardization. It also introduces many users to the idea of syntax (which is extremely important in any language). The beauty of collaborating in a Wiki environment is that we can build a website from scratch and not worry about how it looks or where things are. I would encourage you to take a look at [httP::/www.wikipedia.org: Wikipedia.org] and browse from article to article taking note of things like how pages are organized, structured, and interlinked from one to another. This should be a great way to familiarize yourself with a Wiki that is designed to be an encyclopedia that has the ability to be as up to date as possible. Try searching for a major event that has happened recently! No other encyclopedia can stay as current as one that is created by users from around the world in real-time.
